When I was young and had to go down south to visit Grandma Jean, she would wake me at dawn. Take me out to the fields and show me how to prime the crop. "The bottom leaves are always ready first," she'd say, ripping one free. Then she'd use it as a fan to shoo the mosquitoes and the musk away.
